Public Participation Shapes a New Digital Art Exhibit at the Museum of the Moving Image Astoria, New York — The Museum of the Moving Image (MoMI), in collaboration with the Tezos Foundation, has revealed the three finalists of the MoMI x Tezos Community Curation project. The selection process, driven by public voting, invited audiences to choose from a shortlist of 10 artists nominated by prominent blockchain advocates. The chosen finalists—Rodell Warner, Anna Malina, and Ceren Su—will have their work displayed on the iconic Herbert S. Schlosser Media Wall in the Museum’s lobby. In addition, visitors will be able to mint and take home digital fragments of the artwork on the Tezos blockchain at no cost. The Community Curation project marks the second major initiative of the year-long MoMI x Tezos collaboration, Museum Without Walls, designed to merge public engagement with cutting-edge blockchain technology. The Finalists and the Community Curation Process The 10 nominated artists for the Community Curation project were carefully selected by esteemed advocates from the Tezos art community. Following public voting from September 12 to September 22, the three artists with the highest votes emerged as finalists. Their work will now be showcased both physically and digitally within the Museum, marking a significant intersection of contemporary art and blockchain technology. The 10 nominated artists included: Rodell Warner, Travess Smalley, Anna Malina, Linda Dounia, Ceren Su, Sarah Ridgley, Maya Man, Martina Menegon, Kerim Safa, and Marcelo Soria-Rodriguez. Blockchain Meets Art: A Decentralized Curation Experience Unlike traditional museum curation, the Community Curation project allowed for decentralized participation, shifting the decision-making process from a single curator to the public. Regina Harsanyi, MoMI Associate Curator of Media Arts, and Aleksandra Artamonovskaja, Head of Arts at Trilitech, helped oversee the collaboration. "The Community Curation project reflects the power of blockchain communities by allowing the public to have a direct voice in shaping exhibitions,” said Harsanyi and Artamonovskaja. “This model decentralizes curatorial authority, offering audiences a unique role in the selection process, while also reflecting the decentralized nature of blockchain art itself.” Public Minting Experience: Bringing Blockchain Art to Life Visitors will not only experience the artwork on display but also have the opportunity to engage directly with the technology. A unique aspect of the exhibition is the ability for attendees to mint a fragment of each finalist’s artwork onto the Tezos blockchain. These minted works can be taken home at no cost, further integrating the museum experience with digital ownership.
