New York, New York — The Museum of the Moving Image (MoMI) has announced a groundbreaking yearlong partnership with the Tezos Foundation, aimed at commissioning and showcasing contemporary digital art. This collaboration offers artists a unique platform to exhibit their work and provides visitors the unprecedented opportunity to mint and take home a fragment of the artwork at no cost. Pioneering Digital Art and Blockchain Integration This partnership represents MoMI's largest initiative to date in support of artists working with blockchain technology, reinforcing the Museum's nearly 40-year commitment to integrating emerging technologies into artistic practices. Central to this initiative is the use of the Tezos blockchain, renowned for its innovative and sustainable approach. The Tezos Foundation's dedication to the arts underscores its pivotal role in merging creative expression with technological advancement. "We are thrilled to partner with the Tezos Foundation and to showcase original work at the intersection of art and technology," said Aziz Isham, Executive Director of MoMI. "MoMI continues to be the place where people see the future for the very first time." Accessible Art for All Starting June 28, visitors to MoMI will experience a novel way to engage with digital art. An interactive station in the Museum's lobby will allow visitors to mint complimentary open editions of newly created digital artworks. These artworks will also be accessible online via the Museum’s website. All digital creations will be minted on the Tezos blockchain, reflecting MoMI's commitment to accessibility and the democratization of digital arts. Aleksandra Artamonovskaja, Head of Art at Trilitech, the Tezos blockchain adoption hub, commented, "We’re delighted about this new partnership with MoMI, which continues Tezos' recognition by leading museums such as MoMA and Musée d’Orsay. MoMI’s inclusive approach to democratizing the curation of digital art aligns with the decentralized ethos of blockchain technology." Launch of Auriea Harvey's Open Edition The partnership will debut with an open edition from artist Auriea Harvey, whose major exhibition is currently showcased at MoMI. As an early adopter of Tezos, Harvey's work will be available to all visitors throughout the exhibition's duration. Curated Digital Art Exhibitions The Museum will concurrently exhibit a curated selection of works on its Herbert S. Schlosser Media Wall. The inaugural installation, "Easel Engine," will feature a series of five artists starting with Brazilian artist Sabato Visconti, followed by John Provencher, Estelle Flores, Ailadi, and LuYang. Fragments of each artwork will be available as open editions through the Museum’s website. MoMI’s Vision and Legacy Since its inception in the 1980s, MoMI has been at the forefront of showcasing artists who critically engage with emerging technologies. This new partnership with the Tezos Foundation amplifies the Museum's support for born-digital art and its commitment to eliminating barriers to art access. "Since the 1980s, MoMI has been dedicated to exhibiting artists who critically engage with emerging technologies," said Regina Harsanyi, MoMI’s Associate Curator of Media Arts. "Our partnership with the Tezos Foundation and the artist communities they've cultivated is an exciting addition to our ongoing support of born-digital art."
